Conch Diving
Conch Diving is diving for different species of medium sized to large sea snails and their shells. True conchs are marine gastropod molluscs in the family Strombidae and the genus strombus and other closely related genera. Second in popularity only to the escargot for edible snails, the meat that is inside the shell of the conch is used for food and can be eaten both raw in salads and cooked as in fritters, chowders, gumbos and burgers. All parts of the meat that is in side of the shell is edible. However some people that eat this will only like the white meat and not want to eat the rest. Sea food is often cut in to thin slice and it can then be steamed and stir fired. Many gastopods produce the pearls and those of the Queen Conch, Strombus gigas have been collector’s items since the Victoria times. The conch pearls come in a large range if hues, including white, brown and orange and many other intermediate shades, however pink is the most associated with the conch pearl. The conch pearls can be referred to as the pink pearls as this is what that is known for. The microstructure of the conch pearl comprises partly aligned bundles of microcrystalline fibres which create a shimmering, slightly iridescent effect, and this known as the flame structure.
